Sdružení Podané ruce, o.s. - Prevention and Treatment of Drug Addiction

Summary:

The project aims at bringing opium producers and consumers away from the poppy production and consumption and offer them alternative employment and treatment. The target groups are two: the people who work in the production of opium and those who abuse heroin and their families (produced directly from the opium and used on many occasions unaware of its addictive properties). In order to achieve the project objectives, and with the cooperation of the Mental Health Hospital of Kabul, we will prepare a network of services including educational programmes to teach our target groups the dangers of heroin as well as rehabilitation programmes to "cure" those alreadyaddictive.
The second aspect of the project activities consists of setting up a community centre, containing workshops for the production of Persian carpets (by the women) and jewellery and leather goods (by the men). All goods produced will then be sold in the UK and in the Czech Republic. The target groups will learn not only production skills but also to promote, and sell their products so that they might be able to run the centre alone in the near future.

Main objectives:

1. To present people engaged in heroin production and consumption with an alternative way of living that will give them enough money to have a decent life, so that they will not be forced to return to the poppy fields.
2. To provide them with information on the dangers of heroin abuse and prepare services to help them out of their addiction.Partners
The project includes partners from both the European Union and from Afghanistan.
The partners engaged in this project are:

• Sananim - the largest NGO in the Czech Republic working in the field of drug abuse, based in Prague.
• Centro Italiano di Solidarieta - leading Italian organisation in the drugs field, based in Rome and with over 30 years of experience.
• Podane Ruce UK - London- branch of our organisation.
• VARA (Voluntary Association for the Rehabilitation of Afghanistan) - Afghani NGO that has been working since the early 90´s at developing Afghanistan. They have many large projects in the country and have received funding from the World Bank, the UN, the EU, among others.
• Berkat - humanitarian NGO based both in Afghanistan and in the Czech Republic.
